Elegance in the rain

A young maiko (geisha apprentice) protects herself from heayy rain with a traditional “Bangasa”, a waxed paper umbrella, while walking in Hanamachi or Flower Town, one of the geisha districts in Kyoto, Japan.

It was really pouring down and I thought it would be a good opportunity to capture a few photos of the elegance of the maiko or geiko walking down the street with their beautiful waxed paper umbrella. I got lucky this day as Maiko Kikusana arrived down the deserted street under such heavy rain.

(I was drenched!  No one can see in the photo the way she laughed at me as she walked by…)

京都の花街で、若い舞妓さんが番傘をさして雨をしのいでいます。
この日は本当に土砂降りで、舞妓さんや芸妓さんが美しい紙の傘を持って通りを歩いている優雅な姿を、写真に収めるには良い機会だと思いました。この日私は幸運にも、舞妓の菊咲奈さんが大雨の中、人気のない通りを歩いてきたのに遭遇しました。
(私はずぶ濡れでした！ この写真では見えませんが、菊咲奈さんに笑われたのは内緒ですが……)
