Toei Kyoto Studio Park , also known as “Eiga Mura”, is the only theme park in Japan where you can observe the filming of period dramas (jidaigeki films).
We had the chance to go there on a special evening (adult only) dedicated to the Edo period – fun, sake and some great performances. Most people take the optional “Unlimited Sake” ticket, rent a historic costume and jump into the history. It was already night and dark when we arrived, and we just walked around the huge film set, with various buildings from the Edo period, and lots of figurants not only in costume, but re-enacting scenes of the time. Samurai, Ninja, Geisha, Oiran (prostitute), traders, gamblers, they were all present.
Just in every building and corner of the whole park, we were offered sake to taste, and one can find things to eat everywhere. Little by little, the atmosphere becomes more and more relaxed and fun. We had the chance to attend a live painting (impressive) and then a complete performance involving an Oiran Procession and a little scene in a “Yuukaku”, one of the houses of the old Yoshiwara street (pleasure quarter). The theme park, used to shoot more than 200 films per year, is great fun for the whole family and a good change from the visit of temples and gardens. During the day, various attractions and shows are available. We had a great time and I’m sure you will to!
