I returned to Kyoto at the end of February and then stayed there until mid-May.  Here’s a selection of photos taken before the beginning of the Spring season.  Winter is the quietest season in Kyoto. Very few tourists around. The air is usually cold but clear, and the scenery of Kyoto offers a dignified atmosphere and a unique elegance.  With a bit of luck, it will snow during your stay and you’ll get a chance to be amazed by the view of the city’s temples coated with snow. Yes, the scenery of pure white snow falling on beautiful vermilion lacquered shrine or darker temple architecture is a real treat.

The maiko are not that busy and spend more time walking around the streets of their Hanamachi (flower town or geisha district). I had quite a few opportunities to take photos of them simply walking around, wearing their gorgeous kimono and hairdo.

And yes, we’re in Winter, but from Mid-February, flowers are starting to bloom around the city. The plum blossom in Kitano Tenmangu is probably the beginning of the “season”. And slowly, by Mid-March, flowers are starting to show up just about everywhere around the city. The Spring is about to arrive, together with a lot of people from all around the world!
